چکیده

Aims. We study the dynamics of gas and dust in a protoplanetary disk in the presence of embedded planets. We investigate the conditions for dust-gap formation in terms of particle size and planetary mass. We also monitor the amount of dust that is accreted by the planet relative to the amount of gas, which is an important parameter in determining the enrichment of solids in giant planets compared to the solid content of the central star. Methods. We use a new two-fluid hydrodynamics code to solve the flow equations for both gas and dust. For the gas, we use a Godunov-type scheme with an approximate Riemann solver (the Roe solver). The dust is treated as a pressureless fluid by essentially the same numerical method as is used for the gas. Results. We find that it only takes a planet of 0.05 Jupiter masses to open up a gap in a disk with a significant population of mm-sized particles. Dust particles larger than 150 μm participate in gap formation. We also find that the formation of the gap severely slows down dust accretion compared to that in the gas. Therefore, it is not possible to enrich a newly formed giant planet in solids, if these solids are contained in particles with sizes from 150 μm to approximately 10 cm.

Dust Distribution in Gas Disks II: Self Induced Ring Formation Through a Clumping Instability

Debris rings of dust are found around young luminous stars such as HR4796A and HD141569. Some of these entities have sharp edges and gaps which have been interpreted as evidence for the presence of shepherding and embedded planets. Here we show that gaps and sharp edges in the debris disks of dust can also be spontaneously self generated if they are embedded in optically thin regions of gaseous...

Dust and Gas Debris Around Main Sequence Stars

Debris disks are dusty, gas-poor disks around main sequence stars (Backman & Paresce 1993; Lagrange, Backman & Artymowicz 2000; Zuckerman 2001). Micron-sized dust grains are inferred to exist in these systems from measurements of their thermal emission at infrared through millimeter wavelengths. The estimated lifetimes for circumstellar dust grains due to sublimation, radiation and corpuscular ...

Dust accretion onto high-mass planets

Aims. We study the accretion of dust particles of various sizes onto embedded massive gas giant planets, where we take into account the structure of the gas disk due to the presence of the planet. The accretion rate of solids is important for the structure of giant planets: it determines the growth rate of the solid core that may be present as well as their final enrichment in solids. Methods. ...

Protoplanetary Gas Disks in the Far Infrared

The physical and chemical conditions in young protoplanetary disks set the boundary conditions for planet formation. Although the dust in disks is relatively easily detected as a far-IR photometric “excess” over the expected photospheric emission, much less is known about the gas phase. It seems clear that an abrupt transition from massive optically thick disks (gas–rich structures where only ∼...

Vertical Shearing Instabilities in Radially Shearing Disks: the Dustiest Layers of the Protoplanetary Nebula

Gravitational instability of a vertically thin, dusty sheet near the midplane of a protoplanetary disk has long been proposed as a way of forming planetesimals. Before Roche densities can be achieved, however, the dust-rich layer, sandwiched from above and below by more slowly rotating dust-poor gas, threatens to overturn and mix by the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI). Whether such a threat ...
